Did you know that 126,000 young people are now without a home in the UK? Whilst many of us cosy up in our beds on a night time, this is the harsh reality of the UK’s current homelessness crisis.
At thebigword, we are not just proud of what we do as a language service provider, but also the ways in which we support both international and local communities.
This cause is one which particularly touched our hearts. We believe that everyone has the right to a roof over their head and a safe place to live, especially as we enter colder seasons, and temperatures rapidly fall.
On Friday 13th September, around 30 of our Leeds based staff braved a sleep out in our car park with only cardboard and a sleeping bag for comfort and warmth.
Whilst the temperatures dropped to below 5 °, our brave bunch wrapped up tight and spirits remained high throughout the night, as we knew the discomfort would only last one night. Importantly, it gave us insight to the struggles that are happening on the streets, right now.
In doing this, we raised over £3,500 for CentrePoint, an incredible charity who support more than 10,000 16-25 year olds each year, giving them a safe place to live and the support they need to become independent adults.
CentrePoint provides housing and support for young people in London, Manchester, Yorkshire and the North East and through partnerships all over the UK.
The money that we raised for CentrePoint through sleeping out will help give homeless young people across the UK a chance to create a better future.
