Through thebigword’s 5,745 paid volunteering days program, time is dedicated to supporting this local charity. Recently two of thebigword’s Community Social Responsibility Committee members joined Zarach for a fulfilling day full of deliveries in the Leeds.
Founded in 2017 by Bex Wilson, a primary school teacher moved by a student’s plight of struggling to engage in class due to not having a bed and sleeping on their floor at home. Wilson founded Zarach, and is dedicated to their mission of “Give Every Head a Bed”, providing new bed bundles and clothing to families in Leeds and surrounding areas struck by the poverty crisis.
Families are referred to Zarach through the child’s school, who liaise with the charity and family. Beds, pyjamas, duvets and bed sets are then delivered to the homes by committed volunteers. Zarach also support the families create positive routine through their hygiene kits, providing shampoos toothbrushes.
A recent study from Barnardo’s suggests that nearly over 1 million children in the UK do not have access to appropriate sleeping arrangements necessary due to financial reasons. The cost-of-living crisis has only increased pressures, with more and more families falling below the poverty line. This drives home the importance of Zarach’s work, as they strive to support every family needing support through the poverty crisis and have delivered over 7,500 beds to date.
The Volunteerism plays a pivotal role in Zarach’s efforts, given the substantial demand for their services. Through impactful initiatives like these, Zarach has already made a significant difference in the lives of numerous children, ensuring they have the essentials for daily life.
thebigword’s commitment to Zarach extends beyond volunteering. They pledge a minimum annual donation of £1000 to support families in accessing complete Bed Bundles, comprising brand new beds, mattresses, bedding, pyjamas, and hygiene kits – equating to a minimum of six families struck by the poverty crisis. thebigword also regularly engage in other fundraising activities for Zarach, such as raising a total of £203.81 through a staff advent during the festive period and £120 raised through a summer bake sale.
