thebigword Gives Back to the Community

thebigword recently got its hands dirty for the UK’s national business in the community scheme, Give and Gain Day 2011. On Friday 24th June, employee volunteers from thebigword were put to work on the Beeston Primary School project based in Leeds, with the aim of revitalising the school environment for pupils.

Team leaders Sally Eaton and Febin Vadakkeyil led the team of volunteers who worked together at the school to remodel the small playground, as well as creating an outside cul-de-sac to be used as a quite zone/outdoor classroom. The team was responsible for laying bark chippings, renovating the climbing frame, repairing a height measuring giraffe and revamping the playground markings. For the cul-de-sac renovation the team set to work on chopping back overgrown planting and creating an elevated serene garden area. In order to buy the materials necessary for the event the team held a “Bake Off,” for which thebigword employees baked and sold various cakes.

Give and Gain Day is the UK’s only mass day of action dedicated to getting thousands of employee volunteers out into their local communities and involved in local projects. Last year, in London alone, almost 3,000 employees from 75 businesses joined forces to help 115 community organisations and local schools.
