A teacher and young child communicating through British Sign Language

Oak National Academy Case Study

Oak National Academy is an independent public body that provides free access to thousands of high-quality resources to teachers and pupils from primary through to Key Stage 4. Oak’s mission is to support great teaching, improve pupil outcomes and close the disadvantage gap by supporting teachers to teach, and enabling pupils to access a high-quality curriculum.

They achieve this by providing fully adaptable, accessible resources that can be tailored to suit every pupil in every context. Resources are also accessible to pupils to support their homework and revision away from the classroom.

CLIENT REQUIREMENT

Oak National Academy, an education provider, required 1,000 educational videos – each averaging 23 minutes in length – to be translated into British Sign Language (BSL) to improve accessibility for Deaf learners.

CHALLENGE

The client required a large volume of content to be translated within a short turnaround time. The large amount of videos meant that it was not possible to translate all the content into BSL using traditional methods while remaining within the required timeframe or budget.

SOLUTION

thebigword utilised industry leading AI generated BSL to translate the videos. To ensure a high-quality final output, a human BSL translator was used to review and record each video. thebigword was able to BSL translate more than 100 videos per month with no impact to quality when compared to using a human BSL translator exclusively. Additionally, using AI generated BSL translation, Oak National Academy were able to save more than 70 percent in cost compared to using a human BSL translator.
