thebigword hosts ATC and LSP discussion on Brexit and the developing language landscape

Global language service provider, thebigword, was delighted to host the Association of Translation Companies (ATC) for their Networking event and Council meeting last week.

The ATC works to provide leading advice and professional support about matters affecting the translation industry. They represent and support the interests and legislation status of worldwide translation, ensuring a high-quality standard within the translation industry.

Held at thebigword’s new state-of-the-art centre, thebrainworks, the theme of the event was Brexit and the potential impact on businesses and the linguist community. The event included guest speakers such as Louis MacWilliam, a Leeds-based solicitor specialising in immigration law, who addressed the subject of immigration and safeguarding your EU staff during the process of Brexit.

The event had a fantastic turn out and record attendance from ATC members, as well as representatives from other language industry associations and the academia from around the country. Attendees had the chance to participate in discussions concerning Brexit and the ways that LSP’s can influence the Brexit debate.

Attendees joined interactive and scenario-based sessions with Brexit-specialised solicitors, and were provided with advice on what each of the possible Brexit scenarios would mean for EU nationals, such as the process to apply for pre settled and settled status, as well as associated deadlines and costs.

CEO of thebigword, Nihat Arkan said:  “We were delighted to welcome ATC to our Leeds facility. The LSP industry in the UK is strong and we want to ensure that our employees, linguist community and clients are reassured that thebigword is ready.”

LSP’s and members of the ATC, including thebigword have been taking time to prepare for any Brexit outcome over the past few months. Members have considered setting up additional entities and offices in EU countries, in order to mitigate the impact of Brexit as much as possible.

thebigword has recently been working closely with the ATC to campaign for priority status for the linguist community living in the UK and providing interpreting for vital Government agencies and the National Health Service.

Raisa McNab, CEO of ATC said: “This event was invaluable for all LSP’s and translation businesses to find out how the ATC will be lobbying on their behalf to secure future immigration of translators and interpreters into the UK and how they can support their own employees and contracted freelancers.

We’d like to thank thebigword for hosting a fantastic event and making us feel welcome throughout the whole day.”
