At thebigword, we are committed to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and actively seek opportunities to make a positive impact in our communities. As part of this commitment, we have been building a strong relationship with The New Futures Network at HMP Wealstun in Wetherby, supporting rehabilitation efforts and helping individuals prepare for a successful reintegration into society.
Recently, several volunteers from our Leeds Head Office visited HMP Wealstun to deliver CV writing workshops for individuals nearing release. These workshops provided practical guidance on crafting professional CVs and identifying transferable skills to prepare them for employment opportunities. By equipping participants with essential job-seeking tools, we aim to empower them with the confidence to take their next steps toward meaningful employment.
On reflection of their volunteering session, our team share their thoughts on the experience;
Natalie Wilson, Senior Programme Manager, shared:
“I found the CV writing workshop to be a very positive and rewarding experience, and I would certainly do it again! Writing a CV can be difficult, especially for those who haven’t been in active employment for a while. However, what impressed me most was the effort the inmates put in and their positive attitude throughout.
With some support and encouragement, their confidence grew throughout the day. It was great to see them recognize their transferable skills and acknowledge their strengths. They are eager to impress future employers post-release, and I truly hope they get the opportunities they deserve.”
Sasha Walton, Social Value Partner, said:
“Spending the day at HMP Wealstun helping the inmates write their CVs was an incredibly humbling and heart-warming experience. Sitting down with them, listening to their stories, and helping them uncover skills they didn’t even realise they had was truly rewarding. Some were nervous at first, unsure of what they could offer an employer, but as we worked together, it was amazing to see their confidence grow. Seeing their faces light up when they realised, they had real, valuable experience to put on paper was a powerful reminder that everyone deserves a second chance. Beyond just creating CVs, it felt like I was giving them hope for a fresh start, for a future where they could rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society.”
Olivia Tuckwood, Marketing Coordinator, commented:
“Taking part in the CV Writing sessions held at HMP Wealstun was an overwhelmingly positive and rewarding experience, and one that I am grateful to have had! Working on a 1-1 basis allowed conversation to open up and flow, uncovering lots of transferrable skills and identifying key strengths.
It was refreshing to hear them speak with absolute honesty regarding their experience and it was clear to see their genuine desire to change. The positive attitude towards the session and their engagement was a clear indication of this. Helping them take meaningful steps towards their reintegration into society was very rewarding and I would love to attend another session and provide further support with their CV writing.”
Lucy Thornton, Global Head of Operations (Translation), said:
“The experience was incredibly fulfilling, and I’d like to think I helped several individuals identify their skills and focus on their future career paths.
It’s important for us to use our own skills and experiences to support those who just need an opportunity to succeed. If the occasion arose to repeat the experience I would certainly jump at the chance.”
Tara Kennedy, Marketing Manager, added:
“The whole experience was extremely valuable, both for the individuals we supported and for us as volunteers. It was inspiring to see how engaged the participants were and how much they appreciated the guidance.
Many of them have incredible potential and just need the right tools to showcase their skills. Being part of this initiative reminded me of the real-world impact we can have by sharing our knowledge and experience. I would absolutely encourage others to get involved, it’s a small commitment that can make a huge difference in someone’s future.”
Monaei De’Viana-Horne, Senior People Advisor, reflected:
“This experience was eye-opening and incredibly informative. Interacting with the prisoners was truly positive—I could feel how much they appreciated our help with their CVs.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to change their lives for the better, especially when it helps break negative cycles and empowers them to make positive, impactful decisions. Not everyone starts from the same place in life, and many lack the confidence or knowledge to present their skills effectively in an interview or on paper. That’s why sharing what we know is so important-it helps people recognize their strengths and take pride in what they can offer.
Jess Tiles, the Employment Lead at HMP Wealstun, does an amazing job, but she can’t do it alone! If you’re considering volunteering, I highly recommend it-you will always make a positive impact!”
We are incredibly proud to contribute to this initiative and look forward to strengthening our partnership with The New Futures Network. By continuing to support rehabilitation programs like these, we can help individuals gain the skills and confidence they need to build a brighter future.
